This book has some excellent features to recommend it:

* Excellent organizational structure: a clean and logical grouping of common and related task tutorials in increasing order of complexity.
* An excellent table of contents, tabbed and color-coded to the book's side for quick content location and an excellent and descriptive index that helps you find what you're looking for.
* Good and descriptive section headings and introductions to give you an overview of what will be covered in that section and some idea of key concepts.
* A methodology that is consistent throughout: sequentially number-coded instructions on the left and illustrated and number coded demonstrations on the right, with frequent highlighted text boxes with additional information.
* A good and logical selection of the tasks that most people will need to perform most often.
* Aimed at all of Photoshop's constituencies: the photographer, the print media designer, and the web... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Clear writing and superb layout, but with many limitations, October 24, 2010

As an instructor of over a dozen photoshop courses per year, I've had considerable opportunity to observe my students' learning process, as well as my own as I upgrade to each new version, use the program myself, and create new class handouts. In spite of having read many books in the field, I remain frustrated that none really enter the thinking process of Photoshop learners in regard to: What do I need to do to improve/alter this photo? Which tool would best do the job? Why one instead of another? In what order should I undertake each step?

Unfortunately, Photoshop CS5 on Demand also fails to address or answer these questions.

But as Photoshop books go, and in regard to clearly presenting and delineating the tasks a Photoshop user might want to do, this book is at least as good as its competition. I do, however, most recommend Kelby's Photoshop for Digital Photographers to beginners, and Martin Evening's Photoshop books to more advanced students. Photoshop for... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY - A text that thinks the way I do, July 6, 2010

BIAS ALERT: I've been a professional Technical Writer for many many years. I've been documenting systems and applications full time since the 90s. I try to be objective, but I know I'm a harsh critic when it comes to weak documentation. That's why my praise is so gushing for this book: it's abnormally useful!!!!

I've been a Photoshop user for years--long enough to see decent third-party books and horrible ones. Most of them kill way too many trees and don't get the reader any closer to enlightenment. There's way too much under the hood in Photoshop to sit down and read the documentation from cover to cover. That's especially true since most Photoshop users concentrate on a certain subset of features (too bad that subset isn't the same for ALL users, because that would make it a lot easier to document).

So along comes... Read more
