This year, millions of casual computer users will buy new Windows 8 mobile devices, notebooks, and desktop PCs. They'll want to know how to find their way around, get comfortable, and get the job done - without jargon, complexity, or hassle. There's a book for them: Michael Miller's Absolute Beginner's Guide to Computer Basics, Windows 8 Edition. It's the one book that covers everything today's beginners and near-beginners need to know: not just about Windows, but also about software, hardware, and the Internet. Through 100+ books, author Michael Miller has established an unparalleled track record in explaining complicated concepts simply and clearly, and empowering beginners. Now, he's thoroughly updated his best-selling Absolute Beginner's Guide to Computer Basics to cover today's user experience - with Windows 8, Internet Explorer 8, and today's hottest online tools, from craigslist and Facebook to Twitter, Wikipedia, and Google Docs. The latest edition of Absolute Beginner's Guide to Computer Basics is updated with coverage of Windows 8, which introduces the totally new Metro user interface. Given Metro's genesis as a mobile interface, and Microsoft's push towards a new breed of touchscreen computing devices, this new edition will include more hardware coverage than previous editions. In addition, this book will cover Windows 8's new Metro interface in depth, as well as feature increased coverage of social networking and cloud computing applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Guide I've Ever Seen, November 16, 2012
This review is from: Computer Basics Absolute Beginner's Guide, Windows 8 Edition (6th Edition) (Paperback)
I have taught in the Adult Ed world for 30 years and my only regret is that I didn't find this book sooner. Michael has written a masterpiece for the neophyte. I seldom read a book like this cover to cover but, as geeky as this sounds, I read it from the first page to the last and, at the risk of a little personal embarrasment, learned a ton enjoyably. Most of the other publications out there concentrate on delivering simple hardware and software epistles trying to be as generic as possible. This book delves into both of those areas but then blossoms into social media and networking, buying and selling on-line, music and video downloading and even the tricky world of virus and cyber attack protection. I guess my greatest thrill is that it caters to all audiences, young and old, is a very easy read and, although does deliver opinions on issues, bases them on fact and not the spin of the computer manufacturers and software publishers. To say I recommend it would be a gross... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Computer Basics Absolute Beginner's Guide Updated for Windows 8, December 22, 2012
This review is from: Computer Basics Absolute Beginner's Guide, Windows 8 Edition (6th Edition) (Paperback)
Michael Miller has done an excellent job of detailing and explaining the world of computing for the beginning computer user. I was very surprised at the detail and depth contained in every chapter of the book.

The getting started section talks about uses for a computer followed by detailed descriptions of the hardware inside the computer. It continues with instructions to setup the computer as well as setting up a notebook and tablet computer. Section 2 introduces Windows 8, talks about getting around in Windows 8 (it's different from all prior versions of Windows), how to personalize it and details working with files and folders. Section 3 is all about setting up the rest of your computer, adding peripherals, printers, addition storage and backups and ending up with detailed information on networking all your computers. Section 4 is titled "Using the Internet". It details using Internet Explorer to search the web, doing online research, shopping and selling online, using... Read more
