Jelen thoroughly covers all facets of working with Excel 2010, and adds new chapters on Excel Web App which allows multiple users to edit a spreadsheet simultaneously. New coverage also includes: Slicer, which offers dynamic filtering of PivotTables; Sparklines, which add data visualization to any cell; Calculation engine which improves the speed and accuracy of math, financial, and statistical functions; and the new version of Solver. Step-by-step instructions with icons guide readers through essential tasks such as designing tables, entering data, importing external data, designing and executing queries, and designing data entry forms and printed reports. While I have had the pleasure of seeing a Bill "Mr. Excel" Jelen presentation, I've not had the pleasure - until now - of reading one of his books. I know - "pleasure" and "Excel" in the same sentence?! Jelen writes in a personable manner and throws in dashes of humor (don't overlook the captions for figures) which makes the book easy to read. There are also lots of screenshots throughout. Like other Que Publishing books, this one is also available in an online version so you can reference it anywhere you have access to a computer.Jelen begins the book exploring in detail the changes to 2010. The first four chapters are very helpful in learning about new features and navigating around - even for someone who has been using 2007 for some time. If you're like most people (including me) then you probably barely scratch the surface when it comes to Excel's capabilities. You know it's a powerful program, but you're not quite sure of what it can really do. Well as the... Read more

Bill Jelen's Microsoft Excel 2010 In Depth is a FANTASTIC book! Having moved from Excel 2003 to Excel 2010 very recently, this book had just the content that I was seeking to get up to speed quickly on the latest release. The book contained so much more than I had expected; it is the perfect hybrid of tutorial and reference book. Not only does the book provide simple and straight forward "How To" steps accompanied with relevant visual examples, it also provides real world reasons that warrant the use of the described program options and functions. In a very short time, I was able to attain valuable new tips and tricks that will make my every-day use of the software far more effective. The book has many references and comparisons to previous version's capabilities that I found extremely helpful.

Being an old fart, my first criteria for a reference book is "can I read it/ is it ugly?" Is the typography/design/color use/size of text/font readability "good enough"? If not, forget it.Second: "does it give the impression I can use it to find things I don't understand?" Does it have an extensive index? Does the table of contents consist of "A B C" or does it show rather that the book was laid out according to some scheme? [This book has a 1 page "contents of the contents" followed by a 25 page table of contents.] Then: when opening it randomly do I find sensible/interesting comments? Such as "At first glance, MATCH seems like a function that would rarely be useful." Or "If you've ever created a small web page, you might have learned that browsers ignore consecutive spaces." "Caution: If you remember how they taught you to round in school, you know that the rule is [.5 rounds up]. [The author then presents the alternative "Bankers Rounding".] A final example- after noting... Read more |
