Introduction
When you look at any motherboard built before mid-2004, you'll find that almost all of the expansion slots use a design which goes back to 1992. That design, of course, is the PCI expansion slot. PCI has been the dominant expansion bus factor in motherboard design since the mid-1990s, but it is no longer fast enough to support the high-bandwidth requirements of today's network and other I/O devices. Fortunately, a successor, waiting in the wings since 2001, is now ready to join PCI on motherboards: PCI-Express.
